As the capital of Spain, Madrid is packed with all that the country has to offer. From traditional tavern-style tapas bars to chic, stylish hangouts, there’s so much more to Madrid than meets the eye. Culture vultures will have plenty of art galleries and museums to scout around, while sport fans will be thrilled to get a glimpse of Real Madrid’s stadium and even locker room (!!). Nocturnal animals and performing art lovers will revel in the vivacious nightlife of Madrid.

If you don’t want to miss out on all the latest happenings in town, your best bet would be to stay in the historical center of Madrid. There is no shortage of cheap hostels near Gran Via, Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor (Madrid’s main squares). This area is where free Madrid walking tours start from, so expect to find interesting sites around here.

Hostels in Spain are generally cheap but standard is usually not as good. Madrid, being one of the most popular places to visit, is also one of the more expensive tourist destinations in Spain, so expect to pay more here for hostels than you would in other parts of Spain.
