Getting from Madrid to Segovia

segoviaSegovia is located at just 90 km (50 miles) from Madrid , making it a perfect day-trip destination. Segovia is popular for the Aqueduct, the Alcázar – one of the most beautiful castles in Europe – , the cathedral and the picturesque Old Town.

By train

Generally speaking, I would recommend the bus when traveling in Spain, but in this case I definitely suggest taking the train.
The normal trains (regional) take 2 hours to get from Madrid Atocha (but pass and stop in Chamartin as well). The ticket costs €6.20 per person, one way. The following normal trains are available between the two cities:

  • at 7:33 a.m., Mon to Fri, June 12 to Dec 12
  • at 10:01 a.m., Mon to Fri, year round
  • at 12:02 p.m., daily, year round
  • at 2:01 p.m., daily, year round
  • at 4:02 p.m., Mon to Fri, year round
  • at 6:02 p.m., daily, year round
  • at 8:02 p.m., Mon to Fri, June 12 to Dec 12

There are also high-speed trains between Madrid Chamartin and Segovia-Guiomar. They take ½ hour and a tourist ticket costs €22 per person, one way. The following high speed train are available between the two cities:

  • at 8 a.m., daily, June 12 to Dec 5
  • at 2:20 pm., Mon to Sat, year round
  • at 3:40 p.m., Mon to Fri, May 13 to Dec 12
  • at 4:10 p.m., daily, June 12 to Dec 5

By bus

There are buses connecting Madrid to Segovia but it’s impossible to find too many details online (the website which sells the tickets is filled with glitches; that’s if you have the luck to actually get it to load).
The buses run once or twice an hour from Madrid’s Principe Pio bus station. In Segovia, the bus station is right near the Aqueduct. The buses aren’t cheaper or quicker than the high speed train.

By car

If you like to have the independence of driving a car while on vacation, renting a car in Spain is a wonderful idea.
The driving distance between Madrid and Segovia is about 93 km. It takes 1h 11 min to get between the two cities by car. You will be driving on several partial toll roads (A-6 , AP-6 and AP-61).
