6 Coolest Castles in Spain

Like many countries in Europe, Spain has its fair share of castles. But most people don’t have the time to visit every single castle in Spain… And very few would even want to do so. Which is why we’ve come up with a list of what we think are the coolest castles in Spain. These are the ones worth making a special trip to see, worth writing home about, and worth even bit of the admission fee.

Castillo de Loarre
The Loarre castle was built in the early 11th century in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Unlike some of the castles on this list which were built by the Moors, this one was built to keep the advancing Moorish army out. Two of the castle’s original three towers remain, as does a chapel. The entire castle is today considered one of Spain’s finest examples of Romanesque architecture, although the church which was built in the late 11th century is of particular interest for its innovative design elements (the purpose of some of which are still debated today). Many walls and other parts of the castle have been damaged over the years, and the Loarre castle has undergone several restorations. It may not be the prettiest of Spain’s castles, but its importance cannot be overlooked.

Mallorca

Mallorca beachThe largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca is mostly known for the fancy (and expensive) resorts in Palma de Mallorca, the area surrounding the capital (Palma).

How to get to Mallorca

There are frequent flights to Palma de Mallorca from many European cities. There are also domestic flights from Ibiza and Menorca.

There are ferries from the other Balearic Islands to Mallorca. The prices are much affordable than if you were flying. Also, ferries link several cities from the Spanish coast –Valencia and Barcelona –to Mallorca.

Spain in August

Whereas in some parts of the world, the end of summer is when the temperature finally reaches a point where people want to spend the day outdoors, August in Spain can be downright unbearable during daylight hours. If you ever questioned the whole “siesta” concept in Spain, you’ll understand it completely when you spend the month of August in the country!

In addition to being the hottest month of the year, August is also the month in which most Spaniards go on vacation. This is true not only of Spain, but of many European countries - and unlike other parts of the world, for most Europeans the August vacation month means just getting out of the cities and heading for the coast or the mountains within their own country. And Spain in August is no exception - residents take the opportunity to leave the often brutal city heat and cool off on Spain’s beaches or mountain resort towns.

What does this mean to you, the tourist? Well, that depends on where you’re planning to spend your vacation. If you’re hoping to make like the locals & enjoy the beach life, you’ll need to book well in advance - hotels and hostels in Spain, not to mention campsites, can be full to overflowing in August. And if you think the accommodation options are packed, just check out the beaches - finding a spare bit of sand for your blanket may be a challenge, but you certainly won’t lack for company!

Location

Tenerife (previously spelled “Teneriffe” as well) is the largest of the Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Africa.
