Ibiza: Cafe del Mar

cafe-del-mar-logo.jpgFamous for the incredible sunsets and chill-out (ambience) music, Café del Mar in Ibiza is the place to go before hitting the nightclubs. Although some of the “younger crowds” would probably choose some of the other “hot spots”, crowds in their 30s are common visitors at the Café del Mar’s Sunset bar.

History

The bar/café is located in San Antoni, to the west of West End area. The bar opened in the summer of 1980. Over the years, the music played at Café del Mar accompanied important events. In 2002, when Spain held the presidency of the European Union, a CD was created with images reviewing the Spanish presidency and the Café del Mar music accompanied these images.

In 2005, the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Navigation of Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera awarded “Island Prize” to Café del Mar for outstanding activity in the sector.

What to do

The idea of the café is very simple. Tourists sit by the shores of the Calo des Moro bay, enjoy a perfect sunset while listening to chill-out music provided by the DJs in the bar. Enjoying a drink here is affordable -compared to other places in Ibiza, although still around €8 per drink- and you can chose among a wide variety of drinks.

Café del Mar music CDs

Another reason for the bar’s success is the collection of chill-out albums that have been released annually since 1994. Café del Mar merchandise can be purchased from the official website.

Cafe del Mar SunsetTips

For the best views, sit inside on the top floor. The feeling of being surrounded by clouds, while watching a perfect sunset and listening to relaxing music can’t be compared to anything else in the world.

When visiting their official website, make sure to have the sound turn on. It’s worth every second of music and I have a feeling you’ll head out to grab one of the CDs (I’m definitely hooked!).
