Spain’s capital, Madrid is best known for its cultural and historical heritage. The city is also very famous for its vibrant nightlife. The majority of the tourist attractions are located in the historical center. Enjoy a day of sightseeing, relax in the parks or watch a beautiful sunset. Afterwards, you can dance the night away in one of Madrid’s nightclubs.
Location
Madrid, Spain’s capital, is located little north-east from the center of the Iberian Peninsula.
How to get to Madrid
International visitors come to Madrid via Barajas International Airport (MAD). The airport is located at about 15-20 min from the city and is connected to Madrid via the Metro line.
By train, Madrid is really well connected to Barcelona (5 hours journey) and other major Spanish cities. Madrid is well connected to other European cities as well, such as Paris (France), Lisbon (Portugal), Milan (Italy) and Zurich (Switzerland).
Buses represent one of the best ways to travel in Spain and Madrid is well connected to all the major Spanish cities. Many European countries offer direct bus connections to Madrid as well.
Weather
Madrid’s climate is Mediterranean. The weather is hot and dry during the summer but rather cold in the winter. However, spring and autumn are the rainiest seasons. The temperatures can reach extremes. During winter it’s quiet common for the temperatures to drop below freezing, while during summer they can easily reach 30 C/ 86 F (in July).
The coldest month of the year is January with the average maximum temperature of 9.7 C/ 49.5 F and average minimum of 2.6 C/36.7 F. The hottest month is July, with temperatures reaching an average maximum of 31.2 C/ 88 F and average minimum of 18.4 C / 65 F.
The best time to visit is in April and May when the temperatures aren’t yet very hot.

Almost all of the famous tourist attractions are located in the historical center: Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real and Plaza de Colón.
Puerta del Sol is the heart of Madrid and the busiest place in the city. In the north of the square there is the famous statue of a bear climbing a tree.
Plaza Mayor is probably the best known square in Madrid and one of the main stops for any tourist. Home to markets, tournaments, symphonies and even bull fights, this plaza is home to the statue of Felipe III and Casa de la Panadería, the former headquarters of the bakers’ guild.
Palacio Real (Royal Palace of Madrid) is one of the most beautiful and emblematic buildings in Madrid. Several royal collections are kept in the palace, including the Royal Armory and weapons, a huge collection of medieval weapons and armors.
Templo de Debod is an Egyptian temple located in one of the most beautiful parks. Don’t miss visiting the temple and watch a magnificent sunset.
Madrid is also home to numerous museums, galleries and museums. For those looking for a souvenir, don’t miss shopping at Calle Fuencarral.
When you get tired of sightseeing, you can relax in the El Retiro, one of Madrid’s parks, where you can relax and even rent a boat and have fun on the lake.
In the evening, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant or spend time in one of the nightclubs.
