Getting from Salamanca to Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon and Salamanca are on many travelers’ to-do-lists and fortunately, their close proximity make them easy to hop from one city to the next. For those with a tight schedule who want to add Portugal to your Spain trip, traveling directly from Salamanca to Lisbon would be the best option.
There are many ways to get from Spain to Portugal and vice versa. Besides traveling direct from Salamanca to Lisbon, there are many other ways to get from Spain to Portugal.

By plane

Although Salamanca and Lisbon are served by airports, it is rather difficult to find cheap flights to Portugal from Salamanca. Salamanca Airport (SLM) is rather small and only have domestic flights. Your best bet would be to first take a bus to Madrid from Salamanca and then catch a flight. TAP Portugal flies from Madrid to Oporto. Flights from Madrid to Oporto take approximately one hour. Lisbon’s airport is located very close to the city (just 4 miles from the city) so getting from the airport to your Lisbon hotel is an easy task.

By train

Train is not exactly a good option to get from Salamanca to Lisbon as you’ll have to go through Madrid. You could first catch a Renfe train from Salamanca to Madrid (takes 2 hours 45minute) and then the overnight train (10hours) to go from Madrid to Lisbon. The train is available year round.
The ticket price ranges between €73 and €121 per person, one way, depending on the type of seat and class. You can usually find cheaper bus fares than train tickets.

By bus

Alsa Bus runs daily direct services between Salamanca and Lisbon. There is an overnight bus (which saves you a night of accommodation), and the journey takes 10 hours 45 minutes. The bus arrives at Lisbon’s Estaco de Oriente. The ticket price is €44 per person, one way. Discounts are available for seniors and children under 12.

By car

Renting a car is one of the best ways to get from Salamanca to Lisbon if you prefer to have freedom and want to explore at your own pace. It’s also much faster than taking the train or bus. The driving distance between Salamanca and Lisbon is approximate 550 km and the journey takes between 4 hours 40minutes to 5.5 hours to cover.
You can choose to take A23 or a combination of A25 and A1. Both are toll roads.
